Inspired by the stone carving traditions of the Pacific Rim, Greg Smith creates sculptural glass works that celebrate simplicity, balance and timeless form. Working primarily with the disc and the blade, his pieces reflect the tactile qualities and enduring presence of carved stone.
Greg's process begins with the creation of solid blocks of glass, using a diverse range of materials and techniques. These include Italian murrine canes, which he creates in a hot glass studio, alongside carefully selected raw glass colours that are layered, formed, cut and arranged. Decades of collecting glass have resulted in an extensive and distinctive colour palette, giving each work its own unique depth and character.
Each piece is individually carved from these solid glass blocks using diamond tools before being meticulously hand-finished to achieve its final form. The works are then stone tumbled to produce a silky smooth matte surface that is both visually refined and inviting to touch.
Designed to be worn and appreciated over time, Greg's glass forms develop a gentle patina, much like polished stone. The matte finish gradually absorbs the natural oils of the skin, creating a subtle lustre unique to the wearer. Should minor scuffs occur, the surface can easily be refreshed using a small piece of 1200-grit wet-and-dry sandpaper with a little water, restoring its original soft matte finish.
